I subbed for my friend's behavior unit today. I saw and heard a lot of amazing things in her classroom before. I also saw a lot of really hard situations. She had a child punch her. She also had a student who would book it down the hall whenever he got close to the door. I saw her running down the hall after him several times that year. She worked so hard on his behavior and half way through the year he stopped doing it. She also had a student who would poop their pants on purpose and she had to deal with the mess. (She's been trained on all of these situations.) She is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Anytime I had a student with behavior problems, I would go to her and she would give me the best advice or help me create behavior plans for them. She helped me out a ton. She is so smart!!!
I was excited to sub for her to see how she ran her classroom more in detail. I will admit that I was also scared. I knew her aides would be there and they would help. (Boy, are they awesome!) So let me tell you about the first fifteen minutes of my day. One student got upset and started saying," 'F' you," to the aide about ten times in a row. Did I say that he said the "F" word? He screamed the "F" word. Did I mention that he's in first grade and saying all of these naughty words? I was shocked and didn't know quite what to do. I'm not used to hearing the "F" word. He went to time out and continued screaming it. After a few minutes, he started screaming it again. The aide was incredible. She took him to the office. When he got back, she quickly came up with a behavior plan for every half hour. If he didn't use the "F" word, he earned a smiley face. He then got to decide what he wanted to earn. He would earn a classroom dollar. It worked! He was a completely different kid the rest of the day.
Here are some cool things in her classroom.
She has three different grades in her class so she has to have three different schedules posted on the whiteboard. She is so organized.
She also has "I can" statements all over her classroom.
She also uses plastic coins to reward her students. I love this idea because it gives her students an opportunity to count money and use it for class store.
She amazes me. She has so much patience, ideas, and is one of the most effective teachers I've met.
