Seriously though, I think this is still how some people view substitutes. I've seen firsthand some pretty bad substitutes. One of the worst substitutes I met was subbing for one of my team members. He had the kids marching out to recess. Literally, he said, "Left, right, left!" He also ate some of her personal snacks (ya know the 100 calorie ones that are pretty expensive). She came in after school and caught him red handed. When she confronted him, he said, "I thought they were for the kids." Our principal demanded he pay her back. It was pretty awkward.
I don't view myself as the cartoon substitute teacher above. I have always found it to be the opposite. The students treat me with a lot of respect and are very sweet. Maybe it's because I used to teach a lot of them at my old school or maybe it's because I tell the students at the other school that I used to teach and they just KNOW they can't get away with anything.
Please leave me a comment if you have any bad or good substitute stories. I would LOVE to hear them.
